The commodities screener: metals, energy and agriculture
From gold to coffee to WTI crude, apply your technical rules to 12 commodity futures and get alerted the moment a setup forms.
Precious metals, energy, agricultural products: commodities move to the rhythm of supply, demand and geopolitics, often out of step with equities. The screener tracks 12 futures contracts via Yahoo Finance and applies your technical rules (ATR, moving averages, Ichimoku, Stochastic and 8 more indicators) across 18 timeframes. Automated scans watch every candle close and alert you by e-mail.
What you can screen
- Metals: gold (GC=F), silver (SI=F), platinum (PL=F) and copper (HG=F).
- Energy: WTI crude (CL=F), Brent (BZ=F) and natural gas (NG=F).
- Agriculture: wheat (ZW=F), corn (ZC=F), coffee (KC=F), sugar (SB=F) and cotton (CT=F).
Possible strategies
- Gold's underlying trend: “price above the Ichimoku cloud on the daily” plus “weekly close above the 50 SMA” to follow GC=F only when the trend lines up on two horizons.
- Energy volatility expansion: “daily ATR above its average” on NG=F or CL=F to detect the phases where the market snaps out of its lethargy.
- Agricultural extremes: “Stochastic %K below 20 on the daily” then “%K crossing above %D” on wheat or coffee to spot reversals after a washout.
Market specifics
Futures trade nearly around the clock on weekdays, with short daily pauses and activity peaks during US hours. Each market has its own drivers: weekly inventories for oil and gas, weather and harvests for grains and softs, real rates and the dollar for precious metals. The result is very different volatility profiles from one contract to the next : natural gas can move several times more than gold in a single day. Scheduled reports (EIA, USDA) can trigger violent moves at fixed times.
ATR is your best ally on commodities: built into your rules, it automatically adapts your thresholds to each contract's own volatility, from placid gold to natural gas.
